Alton VFW Post 1308

Welcome to Russell E. Dunham Memorial Post 1308. Our Post was chartered in 1936 and has operated in Alton continuously ever since. In 2019, we renamed our post to celebrate Medal of Honor recipient, Russell E. Dunham. Our post celebrates the camaraderie and traditions of our nation’s service members and supports the families of those who served in conflicts on foreign soil. We invite those eligible to join our ranks and become part of our Post. If you are interested in joining please stop by to pick up an application or visit the VFW Join webpage. We would also like to reach out to past members and those members who have not visited us in a while.

Our mission is to foster camaraderie among United States veterans of overseas conflicts.

  • To serve our veterans, the military, and our communities.
  • To advocate on behalf of all veterans.

While the Post is here to for its members and to help all veterans, the public is welcome at a number of our activities. Details are outlined below.

The public is welcome to join us at the Canteen. It is open six days a week and is the place to be on Friday nights. Each week, we have a band from 7 pm – 11 pm. The kitchen is open from 5 pm to 7 pm, serving a limited menu to help get you out of the house. It’s a good place to catch up with old friends, make new ones, and talk with veterans who served our nation with honor. The canteen has dart machines, a jukebox, and a small gaming room. We even have a hall available for rent to both members and non-members. We have plenty of parking and will work with you to help make your event a success.

The Farm is located in nearby Brighton. It is a 107-acre facility complete with a club room private camping sites, a private shooting range, and a private lake for fishing. The club room welcomes the public, but the outdoor facilities are reserved for members and their guests. The farm is open only on weekends (Fri-Sat-Sun) and is run solely by volunteers. Organizations may rent the farm for private events. For more information, please call 618-466-6883 and ask to speak with the Canteen Manager.

The Auxiliary meets monthly at the Post and works to improve the lives of veterans; active-duty service members and their families; and their communities. Anyone who is a family member of someone who served in a foreign conflict is eligible to join. If you are interested in joining, please stop by the Post to pick up an application or visit the Illinois VFW Auxiliary website. Programs are designed to bring needed services, information, and assistance to target groups.

Thanks again for taking the time to learn about us and our organization. We hope to see you soon.
